It was a great day of rugby, with Woodville Rugby Club hosting the second round of the inaugural SA Women's 7's Competition and the senior men's pre-season matches. The grounds were filled with rugby fans and players all day long, and gave us a taste of the rugby community in South Australia.
Kiwi Hawthorn started out slow with a few errors, but our men started hitting their stride and putting forward a better structured offence and defence towards the end of both matches. Laith Rua was a consistent threat, putting guys into space and showing some incredible footwork. Jimmy Agate was on fire throughout both games converting the four tries of the day from all across the field.
Bert Montgomery and Nick Laufoli both made some big hits on defence and covered the field well against the advances of Brighton and Woodville. Our Kiwis took a 21 - 0 lead over the Wasps, that they were able to defend until the end. Against the Brighton Tigers, the Kiwis continued to play hard but struggled to maintain possession and in the last ten minutes the Brighton Tigers took their lead to 31 - 7, to close out the game.
The pre-season matches were played in great spirits and proved an excellent opportunity to get a gauge on where each team was at coming into the season. And we got to play and celebrate with an awesome bunch of people after the game.
Special thanks to Paul Maihi-Taniora and Pani Aupouri for organising and making the trip happen, and to the Woodville Rugby Club for hosting us. Also thank you to both the Wasps and the Tigers for showing up and playing two hard games of rugby - hopefully we can see you guys again next year!
